Minimalism in Product Packaging

SwissMiss’s recent blog entry shares an interesting article about product packaging and how it has become very visually cluttered. The original article shows many sample ideas. While the designer is clear that the samples are only to prove a point, it would be a totally new experience to walk into a grocery store and have to read the labels rather than having instant recognition because of the images on the labels.

Commenters also made a good point that for many who have low literacy (reading) skills, the picture helps them identify the product. What do you think?

Take a look through the images. In general, do you find yourself preferring the original design (on the left), the simplified version (middle) or the extremely simplified version (right)? Why do you like it?
